Synopsis: Using Michigan's public data, our study shows that when child care is farther away, people are less likely to work. This is especially true for women, but even in two-parent households, both parents are less likely to work full time if child care is hard to get to.
Business Sustainability
- During the Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential's (MiLEAP) November Naptime Nugget meeting, Dr. Jamie Wu, Dr. Marissa Castellana, and Holli Schlukebir from Michigan State University (MSU) presented findings from a June 2025 survey exploring child care providers' experiences with the state's Caring for MI Future (CFMF) grants and ongoing business sustainability challenges.
Caring for MI Future: Survey Findings PowerPoint
This presentation is part of an ongoing collaboration between MSU and MiLEAP through the Child Care Mapping Project, which examines child care capacity across Michigan and features a variety of maps. The Child Care Mapping Project supports the development of new data infrastructure that policymakers and program leaders can use to help ensure that families across the state of Michigan have access to high-quality child care.
These materials were developed under a grant awarded by the Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential using Child Care Development Funds (CCDF).
